The Cold Steel SRK (Survival Rescue Knife) was built with one aim in mind, to produce the toughest multi-purpose survival tool in the industry. A knife you can truly trust with your life!

This practical and tactical fixed blade was immediately embraced by the Military and Special Forces community – and issued by the Navy SEALs for BUDS training - who appreciated the SRK's versatility and durability in even the worst conditions.

This classic design is now available with SK-5 high carbon steel. It is the Japanese equivalent of American 1080, a high carbon steel with carbon between 0.75%-0.85% and 0.60%-0.90% manganese. As quenched, it has a hardness near Rc 65 and produces a mixture of carbon rich martensite with some small undissolved carbides. The excess carbide increases abrasion resistance and allows the steel to achieve an ideal balance of very good blade toughness with superior edge holding ability.

Whatever the mission, we're confident that the SRK from Cold Steel is the knife for you!

The price and shipping cost were what they should be and that is honest. Also, Glad you use the U.S. Mail since FedX, and UPS have decided to Play Politics with us and the Second Amendment.

A good basic knife suitable for most survival, camp, and utility tasks. Not the "best" bushcraft knife (but there isn't ONE), not the best survival knife (but again there isn't ONE that does it all), and not the best combat knife (but it does this job fairly well also).

The sheath of this knife is close to perfect. (It seems so many awesome knives are devalued by bad sheaths). Anyway, this is a light, very sharp fixed blade knife that seems like its easy to resharpen. I like the handle, as I was looking for something that could accommodate winter gloves. The handguard is helpful, and the handle seems like it might be a good choice for those with larger hands. Overall, I give the sheath a 9/10, and the knife itself an 8.5/10.
Scott Caron on 09/14/2021 02:11pm
Fantastic product, but the black blade finish is to rough. Wood pieces stick to blade due to roughness of finish. Finish is tough and after several batoning sessions it remains virtually unmarred. Overall product is really impressive.

This knife is a steal. A classic model comes to the presumably much less expensive SK-5 metal. Prior models in other metals cost $120 or more so this is just great. It looks great and feels great in the hand. A simple and clean design yet totally cool looking like. Great grip. Great blade shape. Nice blade thickness yet not too heavy as a result. A versatile knife for tactical survival and bushcraft at a steal of a price. If you are a knife nut just get it. It does not matter if you do not need it! You will be happy.

I love this knife. Very durable and sturdy. Chops well and can be sharpened to hair popping sharp. I have done batoning chopping and spoon making all with this one knife. Edge retention is not phenomenal but thats to be expected with the price. Overall this knife keeps me coming back to Cold Steel for quality knives on a budget. I also bought an SRK in VG10 San Mai ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS blade.

I bought this knife to go into a vehicle emergency kit that I am cobbling together. I put it through the same battery of basic field tests as I put most of my outdoor belt knives through and it performed as well as any of them. I batoned and processed wrist diameter wood into kindling feathered sticks processed some cedar bark for tinder with the spine and made a fire. Surprisingly the coated spine will throw sparks from a ferro rod; it wont produce a huge shower of sparks like my Garberg but it was enough to get a fire going. I took down and delimbed small diameter saplings and carved some basic notches into a stick. It held up well to the more abusive tests and performed the more delicate knife specific tests with aplomb. If I did not already have a drawer full of knives that are more ideally suited to specific tasks I would have bought another one to have as a regular user as I think it would make a good all around field knife. It is almost too good to let it sit in a bag in my truck but I have to keep reminding myself it cost less than most of my EDC folders. If it is stolen out of my truck I wont cry and it gives me comfort knowing that I have a capable life sustaining tool within arms reach when I am away from home.
Technoman on 08/03/2020 02:31pm
Uneven grind at the tip but overall looks official. Does not seem so weak at the tip and hollow grind is sturdy.
Jeff H on 05/27/2020 09:59am
Start with the price. For the 3V steel this is a pretty low priced knife. The 3V steel is one of the current super steels that is very high on toughness. The hardness is probably not taken to the maximum so the toughness is very high. This is carbon steel and it will discolor and/or rust if not given some oil or wax. The handle is friendly to the hand if not the most attractive. But for this use (abuse) is handle charm the deciding factor? Sheath holds the knife like the handle fits the hand. Both get the job done without cosmetic consideration. This is a knife capable of being used and abused and not be worried about appearances.
Carlton Reth on 02/21/2020 11:59am
I like it. It seems as though it will excel at everything I need it to do as a side knife out in the desert here in New Mexico at a really good price. The edge was really nice upon receipt with just a tiny burr in a couple of spots. I ran it across the edge of an oak board a couple of times and the burr disappeared. So hair popping sharp in thirty seconds. I have never needed to baton one of my side knives and do not see myself ever stabbing a car hood. So this blade geometry just works great for my needs. Cutting and slicing. As for the sheath mine fits great and the edge does not rub on it. No rattle and fits nice and tight. QC on mine seems excellent. At almost the exact same price as my Boker Giant Bowie (which certainly is not giant) this Cold Steel is a much better knife. And it should be MUCH more durable. So in closing: use it as a knife. It will last longer than you will. And buy a Trailmaster and a Mora for bigger and smaller tasks.

Been a Cold Steel fan for a while and even have an original Voyager tanto made in Japan and it has still held up. Usually not a fan of their cheaper line of knives however the SRK is really nice for the value. SK-5 Steel is roughly equivalent to 1075 which while it Is not 1095 it Is still a respectable steel. If you are looking for a super Steel like CPM3V or S35VN this is not it and the price reflects that. The knife is quite well made. The blade grind was perfectly even. Has a sharpening choil and was razor sharp out of the box. Handle is very comfortable and the rubber overmold grip gives a lot of traction. Lanyard hole will easily accommodate 550 paracord. I was surprised the Secure Ex sheath is actually really good. Yes it is plastic but it is a hard plastic and has excellent retention. If you choose to remove the nylon belt attachment the knife will still be secure.

Love this knife, I wanted this knife years ago but they were eighty bucks. I didn't want to pay that much for anything made in Taiwan. Years ago anything made in Taiwan was just junk. But that's not the case anymore. Since American companies went there and set up factories with some quality control standards Taiwan products are much better. Cold steel is a good example. Hell of a knife.
D Straughn on 05/09/2019 02:26pm
Knife was exactly as advertised - arrived quickly - was a good value. This is a Cold Steel knife - not a cheap copy. It is the knife issued to soldiers during BUDs Training. It is an excellent choice for survival or bushcraft. You should have one!
DualSportSurvival on 04/27/2019 05:35pm
This thing is awesome! Takes my favorite survival knife design to a whole new level! If you do not own an SRK find the version that fits your budget and buy the thing! I have beaten up 4 different versions of this knife on my Youtube channel with no failures on any of them!
Oscar Moreno on 01/19/2019 11:19am
A great knife for the real world. The sk5 steel is perfect for a working field knife... easy to sharpen and tough. Kraton handles lack the looks and marketing of newer materials but it works and does it better than those materials. Wet slimy hot or cold Kraton rubber grips firmly in your hand. Blade shape is great for general use as is the length. Came sharp and easy to resharpen. Sheath is nice... better than many at this price. I use as backpacking/camp knife and it does well. You will find youtube destruction videos... yes it is that tough. No it is not US made. No it does not have exactly symmetrical grinds. It is a $40 field knife and better than knives I have owned costing many times that amount. Better than the last 3 American made knives I have owned.
Bill McGee on 09/04/2018 11:05am
I really like this knife! It is sturdy. The grip is good for me and I like the sheath. The sheath definitely will keep the knife secure and I can still remove the knife when I need to. I also like how you can lash it to a pack if you need to. I wish the strap was adjustable though so I can spin it to use my thumb to release the knife instead of using my index finger. It is a preference thing though so I would not fault anyone. My Ka-Bar sheath gives the option to rotate the snap which I like. Overall I would recommend this knife for an overall practical tool.
Darrin Paley on 06/27/2018 08:16am
I received my Cold Steel SRK SK-5 knife a few weeks ago. Out of the box I was admittedly liking the way everything looked. The sheath appeared very adequate and the retention on the knife felt secure. The belt loop with a snap was a nice feature. Once I removed the knife from the sheath it felt very good in my hand. The handle is comfortable and the grip is firm not slippery. The knife itself was razor sharp. I was able to easily make some curls from a piece of cedar wood. Then used the 90° spine to scrape some tinder to add to the curls. Again I used the 90° spine to scrape a fire-stick to create a spark and a flame. This knife does many of the things a woodsman needs.
Roger Van Eaton on 02/26/2018 02:31pm
This knife has been to hell and back for me. I%u2019ve used and abused this knife in every possible way you should and shouldn%u2019t use a knife and it always comes back for more! Anytime I go off the grid this is the fixed blade I pack. Great job Cold Steel!
Payton on 01/15/2018 04:01pm
The handle is girthy the images of this item are deceptive and make the handle look inadequate. I have had my eye on this knife as a utility companion for a long time. The images of the handle make it look less formidable than it actually is. It came very sharp and could probably serve as the only knife in a bug out bag survival or camping set. I have seen some reviews that say the knife breaks easily. I have suspicions that these individuals have used the knife in odd ways perhaps battoning by striking the knife at an odd angle. In any case this knife is in a very small niche category sub $50 and likely durable when treated with respect.
B. Hare on 09/19/2017 08:46pm
This is my second SRK. I bought the AUS 8 version of the SRK and really liked it. Felt like it could survive anything. One tough blade. Now I will be retiring it and replacing it with the 3V version. This thing is amazing. They took one of the toughest knife designs and used one of of the toughest steels to make what feels like the toughest knife on earth.
Jay Scott on 07/24/2017 09:54am
Excellently made, well balanced, holds an edge well. A good choice from deployment to camping.
Mike Berry on 05/19/2017 08:34am
This is one great knife!! Been meaning to pick one and finally did. Nice even grind. Great craftsmanship! Cold Steel makes great knives and I would recommend this srk to anyone! The sheath has multiple lashing points and holds the knife nice and tight. I wont touch on specs since they can be seen in description and on cold steel website.
Jon S. on 01/24/2017 08:42am
I just bought this and the ontario sp46. The cold steel seems like it would be less effective in the woods. But easier to carry in the woods. The sheath is superior to that of the ontario. But the ontario really inspires confidence. I think the srk would fit the survival role ok. I would prefer the ontario for woods use. For the price its a decent knife. The 5160 steel will dominate the sk5.
A. de Luca on 10/05/2016 06:08am
Thought it would be tuff enuff to throw tip broke under 10 throws.
Jason M on 08/23/2016 01:38pm
Absolutely 100% amazing deal! This is truly a do it all knife and will last a lifetime. Bought this knife for camping trips so it will be used and put to the test this year as I live in West Yellowstone MT and will be camping damn near every weekend from May through October. If your considering this knife then pull the trigger already and be amazed.
Mike Miller on 06/14/2016 01:14pm
Bang for your buck is an understatement here. Cold Steel always provides durability blended with control and quality materials. I have own almost all variations of the SRK and this SK-5 model at this price point is an insane value. Everything about this knife mimics its over $100 steel option versions (3V and San Mai) but loses very little of the performance. I have hammered on this knife high in the mountains of colorado no problem. Splitting slicing carving it does it all and re-sharpens incredibly well. I recommend this knife to all outdoors enthusiasts who are looking for an affordable knife option but dont want to sacrifice quality. Sheath is as well on par with everything Cold steel does and I love it. Keep em coming Cold Steel.
Frederick Palmer on 04/05/2016 10:57am
This is the standard issue knife for Navy SEALS. It has a sturdy thick battle-proven blade that can withstand plenty of abuse and hold its razor-sharp edge. Rubber handle is grippy comfortable and does not slip when wet (water oil or blood). I rarely get hot spots while using (bare handed or with gloves). Always with me in the field. Highly recommend!!
Calvin Hurley on 02/17/2016 05:28pm
There is a reason the PX couldn't keep these in stock in the IZ. All the infantry were buying them up to replace their K-Bars. I watch what those in the know do and then I copy success. While this is not a full tang knife it is plenty sturdy for field use. I have no problem batoning this through 3 inch diameter wood.
Matthew Burkholder on 12/29/2015 12:39pm
This is a great sharp knife that was built for use. While it will look good in a collection box it will be a waste not to use this strong sharp knife. It is very well made and the craftsmanship shows as you look at all the small details. I carry it as a backup weapon and it is light yet strong and inspires confidence. It is also great for collecting your own blood if you dont pay attention :-) so it has training or learning benefits as well as being a very useful tool for anything that needs cutting from a seat belt in an emergency to a box to self defense if nothing else will do.
Scott Dupre on 10/20/2015 04:43pm
Received this today and really liked the build of this. No frills. No B.S. No gimmicks. Just a sturdy usable knife. I immediately went outside and put it to use. It came with a decent edge and held up to everything I put it through. The finish is very durable and doesnt look as though I did much at all. This is by no means a chopper but in a survival situation it will chop. It will split wood just take smaller bites. Work smarter not harder with it. I recommend this as an all around get it done blade.
Steve Rost on 06/29/2015 09:23am
SK-5 steel. Good stuff! The knife design is now legendary. It has just the right weight. The right design. And the right build to see it and you through the most grueling situations imaginable. Sharpens fast and easy. Holds its edge for a long time. And is just plain badass as a knife on your hip. It will never fail you. Cuts trims splits notches and will defend you without a hitch. Wish this knife was around 50 years ago when I was in the jungle. Cold Steel SRK is a modern classic that deserves a place in your collection or better on your belt!
Pete Verboom on 03/23/2015 03:27pm
This knife is beautifully balanced and constructed. It snaps into its sheath and the rubberized handle would be secure even if wet. That being said it is the dullest knife of this quality I have ever bought. Im not sure why. If you watch the video at the Cold Steel site they demonstrate it doing amazing things. Be prepared to sharpen or have it sharpened. Out of the box it cant cut anything.
Rob Wilcox on 01/28/2015 05:42pm
5 Star fighting style knife. Among my favorites in general and this would be a go-to for a self defense style knife where legal. The blade design and texture is fantastic. It holds up well. I have one from a garage sale from years ago that saw a lot of abuse but held up well. So I added a few new ones to the collection. Sheath is rugged and well made too. My only complaint would be that the bottom of the pommel should have a useful purpose as a flat hard striking surface or window punch. Oh well still 5 stars.
Kevin Schwantz on 11/17/2014 09:57am
I have one of the original models from... 20-30 years ago? Anyway its a great knife and has suffered through much wood-chopping fire-making tree-throwing abuse. It has always been a favorite of my now full-grown sons so I got them each one of their own. And it costs half as much now as it did when I bought the original! You cant go wrong with this knife.
Jeffrey Lawrence on 09/03/2014 05:25pm
Overall very pleased. Very strong blade sheath is adequate. Only complaint is that the handle is a bit too thin. I have a bit above average man hams. I havent wailed hard on this yet but I can tell already that the handle would be a bitch to featherstick with or any other task where you are bearing down on the handle for a while. You could wrap the handle to fix this though up to you. It has a flat pommel which is good for a combat-style grip. Its clear they were trying to take both roles into consideration which is fine. Just be aware theres probably better more comfortable bushcrafting type knives out there.
Steven Kano on 08/08/2014 09:39am
I got the SK-5 steel version to test out before spending the money on the 3V version. I chopped down several 2 inch diameter saplings. I chopped tree limbs and debarked them. I batonned it through oak logs while striking both the base and tip of the blade with the baton. No damage except for the blade coating. The knife still shaves. Im impressed with it so far.
Omar Garza on 08/04/2014 01:38pm
Superb knife. Quality feel and sharp right out of the box. Ive owned several knives from cold steel that have survived and thrived where other knives wouldnt dare go and I expect nothing less from this one.
Peter Savinaw on 06/12/2014 08:38am
I have lots of knives. Some expensive and other not as much. This is easily one of my favorite knives. Ive been considering buying another model in a different steel. I would recommend this knife to anyone. Seriously you cant go wrong with this knife. Just do yourself a favor and buy it now.
Raul Miller on 04/06/2014 11:23am
This is a super knife indeed! The crazy hair poppin sharp blade edge right out of the box alone is worth the price of this knife! Why didnt I order this years ago? For the money hands down you cannot beat what you get with this baby!
Jack Doherty on 03/28/2014 05:57am
This version of the Cold Steel SRK is a substantial knife at this price point for sure. I had one of the original SRKs from when they first came out and it was my favorite multi-purpose knife right up until I lost it. This newer version definitely feels a bit lighter to me but the design/dimensions are spot-on and it feels great in my hand. So far it is holding an edge and looking like a fine successor to my old one. Would definitely recommend especially for a knife at this price.
HunterMike on 02/11/2014 03:11pm
When I first started buying knives from COLD Steel they made it a point to let you know that their knives were made here in the USA. This SRK is made in Taiwan.
Tom Tuzza on 11/03/2013 02:29pm
Cold Steel makes a lot of mall ninja stuff. I bought this because it had some good reviews and didnt scream that I live in my parents basement like a lot of their other products seem to do. I expected it to be a beater knife to throw in a work bag and forget about it. Low and behold... its actually really nice with a good sheath. Thick sharp and comfortable in the hand. Gonna put into my woods walk and work rotation.
Samuel Michaels on 07/19/2013 06:27pm
This piece of gear is a must. It is by far the best value in the price range. Comes VERY SHARP. Has a beefy very nice sheath with a great nylon belt loop that has both velcro and a metal snap closure. The handle is rubber coated and gives great purchase on the knife when it is bloody or wet. The blade is robust and has a nice coating on it to protect the blade steel. I would highly recommend this blade to anyone looking for a quality field knife.
Knifeman on 01/11/2013 07:18pm
Looks like Cold Steel is still making a few good knives and this is one of them. Thick tanged very sturdy blade. Nice heavy duty finish. Grip is excellent. Sheath is rather outstanding for the price. Form fitting kydex with pressure retainment weep hole in tip velcro and snap on belt loop for quick on/off. Outstanding value for the price! Get two-- one for use and one for the emergency bag.
Jay Cook on 11/16/2012 02:56pm
My first day out with the SRK for a little bushcraft testing went well. After battoning shaving feathering and dragging on some dry wood the blade looked like it went through the ringer. However after quick wipe off with a towel the finish looks brand new like it was never used. After my testing on wood the knife still cut through paper like it was butter. Very happy! I recommend for a value knife.
Guy Shidner on 05/24/2012 07:58pm
I dont know how to describe how much I like this knife. I actually want to hate it because this knife is only a $42 blade and I have much more expensive knives. Anyways If I have to go knife-to-knife with another person I would choose this one. When I have it my hand it feels like it is part of me. I have it my truck always with me laying right next to the gear shifter.
C Stoecklein on 12/28/2011 09:39am
This is my favorite knife to use for fatwood hunting. I use it to dig in the ground to look for fatwood roots and also take apart half-rotten Douglas Fir logs looking for fatwood. Baton wood into smaller pieces for kindling etc. About the only thing it does not do well is food prep because its much too thick. I use a knife with a smaller blade for that. Knife holds an edge reasonably well and is easy to sharpen. Sheath is excellent and holds knife very securely. Recommended.
Greg Moore on 12/04/2011 01:41pm
This my second SRK purchase. I bought one of the first run knives back in 2006. Shaving sharp out of the box and very durable. Ive used them for all types of Bush craft projects out in the woods here in Wyoming and even field dressed a few animals as well. This knife is hard to beat for the money. Its almost as good as my ESEE 6 and only misses by a small margin. The ESEE steel is just a higher quality. Dont pass the SRK up it will serve you well.
