The Merkur Futur Double-Edge Razor has six different depth of blade adjustments. Light beard or heavy beard, sensitive skin or normal skin - the Futur can shave it all comfortably. The fine adjustment mechanism is unique to the Futur DE Razor and is patented. Double-edge blade tension is set perfectly by the razor head when it is snapped onto the handle base. The snap-on, snap-off razor head also makes it easy to clean and change blades. The Merkur Futur (means Future in German) is the number-one selling shaving razor and is known for the clean, comfortable shaves it produces. The shaving adjustment feature is nice to have when you first start to use a DE (double-edge) Razor because the various adjustments allow you to get used to the closeness of a DE shave. The weight and heft of this razor seems to be just right and the shape of the handle fits the thumb and index finger for great feel and balance. It's 4.5 inches long and weighs in at 4.25 oz., just a little less weight than a Vision Razor and a little more than the 38C HD Hefty Long Handle Razor.

This is my very first safety razor. The build quality and close tolerances of this razor make it a high quality tool that will probably last me a lifetime with normal use. There are 6 positions on the twist handle that move the safety bar from 1 (least aggressive) to 6 (most aggressive). The finish is a brushed steel and the razor is a big, heavy instrument. But when you get the hang of it, you will get a very smooth shave with less irritation than those multi-bladed monstrosities.

I did a bit of research on how to wet shave with a double edged (DE) shaver. The main thing to remember is that you should NEVER push down on the razor. You should let the weight of this fine tool do the work. I made the mistake of pushing down on my face with this razor during my first shave and wound up hacking my face pretty good. After about 3 days my face healed up well enough to try shaving again with this razor. This time I used slow, short, deliberate strokes letting ONLY THE WEIGHT OF THE RAZOR rest on my face. And the results were much better. No more blood shed! And I got one of the smoothest shaves in my life.

Remember to let the razor's weight do the work, make slow and short strokes, and take your time. If you do this, you'll be rewarded with a BBS shave with little to no irritation. This Merkur Futur is a fine shaving tool which will last me a lifetime. Very expensive but well worth the money.

I get an awesome smooth shave from this razor second every time I use it. It is extremely well made with quality. If you want an excellent shave this is the razor for you.

This is an absolutely fantastic razor. The best money can buy, and far from the most expensive. I've had no problems with it and it shaves great. Over time you will save alot of money on blades. After I used the Merkur blades which came with it I bought Derbies and the work good... a little more forgiving and alot less expensive. I love this razor and recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a good DE razor. I am actually looking forward to shaving now.

A Mannish Razor. I've been using throw aways for too many years... in fact, it was the army which got me into the habit. Anyway, I was at the mall over the weekend, and I kept seeing beautiful signs and art work advertising about shaving, so I search the mall until I found it. "The Art of Shaving-New York" Truthfully, I haven't had a great shave for over forty years! I began browsing... I saw and held the Merkur "Futur". I went home and looked it up online and found one at Oso Grande for only $78.26! I really, really dig it!

A Close Shave From the Old School. Buying yourself a double edged razor kit may seem a little old fashioned to some. What with the proliferation of multitudinous electric models and the domination of the market by 'shaving systems' meant to be disposed of, this ancient technology may seem like an anachronism at best. Why should you buy a Merkur razor instead of picking up a Schick or Gilette at Wal-Mart and calling it a day?

These Merkurs are truly built to last. The razor is quite heavy, something the picture cannot possibly convey, and as a result it glides across your face without having to 'tug'. Sure, the initial cost seems pretty steep, but you will literally never have to buy another razor in your life. The blades for your new razor will probably cost between $2 and $5. Compare that with the exorbitant prices of the American name brands and you will instantly see the benefits over an extended period of time.

This model has a rotating head, allowing the user to expose as much or as little of the blade as he considers prudent. The bar that gives the safety razor it's name will be adjusted to offer more or less protection against the blade, so that on a setting of 1 a novice is unlikely to cut himself even if he is trying to. Please note I said ROTATING, not swiveling! Should you choose to switch you should be aware that you will face a slight learning curve, since you are likely used to a blade that 'follows' your face, e.g. the Mach 3. You will need to teach your wrist to swivel instead, and this may feel clumsy at first. It took me about a week to start shaving on auto-pilot, the way I was used to doing with disposables, without having to concentrate specifically on the job in hand. I think I nicked myself twice until I got the hang of it. It's not a seriously difficult change; I only bring it up in the interests of explaining to you what a safety razor can and cannot do.

Very good razor... Just not for me. I'm new to DE shaving but like many other newbies, I got sick and tired of paying those high prices for disposible pieces of plastic. My first purchase was the Merkur 180 Long Handle... After my first shave I was hooked! No nicks, cuts, or anything! I figured with such a great experience, a shave with the Futur should be even better... After I tried it I was equally pleased with the comfortable close shave... Here's the one problem: I have a goatee and it requires a little carefull trimming around the edges. I did not realize until I used the Future that the head is rather large (by comparison to the 180) and the sides overlapped the edge of the blade so much that it was very difficult judging exactly where I was cutting... I ended up taking too many swaths out of my beard and I went back to the 180 Long Handle. Honest opinion the Future is a fine razor that cuts beautifully. If I went clean shaven it would be perfect. As I sport some facial hair I just found it a bit too clumsy... Obviously this could also have to do with my lack of experience. But for precise trimming in those tight places, the 180 worked much better. So, for those of you bearded guys considering switching to a DE blade, maybe this is something to think about.

I love this thing! I have been a straight razor guy for a while now. I have more then a hand full of them. Don't get me wrong, I love shaving with them, but keeping them sharp is a pain in my hectic life. I bought this because I was buying three or four disposables for those times where I needed to shave and my straights edge weren't up to the task without a good honing. I have this Merkur and love the craftsmanship of the razor! It is a thing of beauty. I am glad to not be throwing away money on disposables and also glad not to be throwing them in the trash. I ordered 50 Merkur stainless blades and I can see them lasting me the next two or three years. It will definitely pay for itself.

Worth It. This Razor is well worth the money. One of the biggest complaints I hear about this razor is that it "slips". This is not an issue for me, it may be an issue for people that soak their hands in their shave soap, but for me there has never been a problem. The Futur has a great weight, one of the best adjusting settings and a great feel when you shave with it. Get it.

Quality Instrument. You can feel the precision when you first pick up this razor. Substantial, but not heavy. Adjustable blade angle is a plus, especially for those new to double edge shaving. As one's skill increases, so can the blade angle to help get the closest most comfortable shave possible. I got one nick the first time I used it and that was it. The shave is smoother than anything I have had in 30 years. The Merkur Futur's construction is professional grade - well worth the price. It's too bad that TSA won't let DE blades on carry on luggage otherwise I would give away all of my disposables.

Good shave. I have most of Merkurs razors and I just tried this one recently. It felt a bit slippery when wet but it never felt as though I would drop it. It is also a heavy razor and the head is larger than most razors making under the nose shaving a bit more difficult but certainly possible with practice and patience. I love my Merkur Progress razor the best and this Futur will not surpass it but it will give you a close close shave especially on the higher settings. I went mostly on setting 4 of 6. I did get 2 small nicks on that setting. I like the flip design where you flip the top off and have access to the razor underneath. Some feel its a more dangerous design. It likely is not but it is different and takes some getting used to. Also this design tends to hold more dirt and debris and needs to be cleaned at least every other shave. The blade tends to vibrate more when shaving off whiskers making a more intense sound than with the other Merkurs. I like this feedback and it helps to find that sweet spot angle. I will get my money's worth from this razor but I still like the Progress model better.

Amazing Razor. I have been using this razor almost daily since I purchased it three years ago. I absolutely love shaving with the razor. It is weighty yet well-balanced. The design of the razor is timeless. It is exceptionally well-built. In three years of daily use, the razor still looks and performs as if it is brand new. When I purchased this razor, I wanted to buy a razor that would last me the rest of my life. So far, this razor appears it is up to this task.
