Instructions - USING THE PUCK

Step 1 - Firmly grip the tool to be sharpened or lock in vise to prevent slipping. If desired, apply a few drops of Lansky’s Nathan’s Natural Honing Oil to the grit on the side of The Puck which will be used to sharpen.

Step 2 - Grasp The Puck firmly with thumb and fingers, supporting it by the palm of the strong hand. Move The Puck in a circular motion, overlapping the circles as you move along the entire cutting edge to be sharpened. For the best results maintain a consistent angle while sharpening.

Step 3 - Work one whole side of the tool’s edge before repeating the sharpening procedure on the other edge.

Suggestions:

1. For badly worn, nicked or very dull edges, use the coarse grit side of The Puck first. To apply a finer edge, repeat the process with the medium grit side of The Puck

2. If tools to be sharpened merely need a touch-up or dressed edge, skip the step with the coarse grit and use only the medium grit side.

After extended use, metal shavings will build up on The Puck and be visible as dark grey masses that will start to make The Puck feel smoother. To remove the metal build-up, apply a few drops of honing oil on to the affected area and gently spread with your finger. After about a minute, the oil will have lifted the metal shavings to the surface and they can be wiped off with a lint-free cloth. For larger amounts of build-up, multiple applications of oil and wiping may be necessary.

Be Smart, Be Safe and Stay... An Edge Above the Rest!

CAUTION: Knife sharpening is an inherently dangerous activity. Used properly this sharpener cannot hurt you but a carelessly handled blade or pointed object can.

Just a great sharpener. Nothing more to say.

Delivery was prompt and on time. The stones are exactly as advertised.

Just starting out with this stone, not using water or oil just dry. It seems to repair and hone an axe decently well, with practice. Recommend using a vise to secure the axe/tool and bringing the puck to the blade carefully, with those classic concentric circles. Use bright light to see the dust on the stone, thats a good way to make sure you are actually grinding the edge.
I honestly wish it was that much finer, but that's user negligence not picking a proper honing stone as well. Dont expect this to be creating razor sharp edges. Its a basic dual grit coarse/medium repair stone, and its a great deal for what it is.

Very nice sharpener. Rough side and soft side. I used it to sharpen my dull and rusted hatchet and it created a very nice sharp edge. I did not use the Lansky oil like they recommended and it still came out fine.

Love the dual grit. Now my axes and machetes are razor sharp.

ve used it pretty strenuously for the last couple of years and it's still keeping my tools sharp. Great product!

The dual grit is excellent for keeping my axes sharp in the field. I keep it in my pack whenever I go to harvest trees in my forest for firewood.

Great sharpener for my axe and hatchet. My hatchet is so sharp now that I can feather sticks.

I use it to hone my axes and hatchet, and so far it's worked great.

Your last blade sharpener! Bought this one to replace original puck given to a neighbor.

Very nice sharpener. Rough side and soft side. I used it to sharpen my dull and rusted hatchet and it created a very nice sharp edge. I didn't use the Lanskys oil like they recommended and it still came out fine so that's not absolutely necessary.

Nice stone for hatchets and axes. Easy to carry and has two grits.
Chuck McGee on 09/23/2014 02:36pm
This stone can't be beat if you use your axe or machete a lot! The round shape gives you a good gripping surface and lets you use it without getting the uneven wear that long rectangular stones get.

This product works great. I soaked it in mineral oil to serve as a flux that would keep the stone free of excess steel filings. The dual sides work well to bring a dulled (but not fully blunted) edge back to sharp. A few passes on the coarser side followed by a few light passes on the smooth side work quite effectively. The round shape and the fact that the stone fits in the palm of the hand make sharpening large, curved or odd-shaped blades much easier.

However, the round shape and beveled edges do make it more difficult to sharpen smaller blades (4" or less) than a standard rectangular stone with slab sides would be. For large camp knives, machetes, axes, hatchets and the like though, the Lansky Puck is just the ticket!

I keep this to sharpen my granfors bruks axe or my condor machete in the field. It is a light weight easy to pack solution for keeping your gear sharp in the field. It is also very useful when sharpening anything with a curve in it that you cant get to with a regular sharpening stone. Would recommend to anyone with any large cutting tools that they want to keep sharp.
