The Hults Bruk Jonaker is the most compact hatchet made by HB. This superb hatchet is designed for tasks such as making kindling, doing light clearing and for any number of backcountry jobs. It is ideal for including in your pack and being worn on a belt. This axe has an axe head weight of one pound and a handle length of 9.4 inches.

The Hults Bruk Jonaker Hatchet is a functional axe with an emphasis on the use of top quality materials to achieve a highly functional and durable tool. This axe is made at Hults Bruk in Sweden. Forged from top quality Swedish axe steel with a carefully attached handle that is made from selected oiled prime hickory. This axe is an excellent value for money.

The axe head is hand-forged and made from Swedish axe steel in a foundry that has been in operation since 1697. As part of the production process, the steel is struck multiple times thereby increasing its density and resulting in more durability of the axe. The head is constructed in such a way that there is a tempered zone designed to hold a very sharp edge even after many sharpenings. A traditional leather protective sheath that is embellished with some unique Swedish decorative elements is included.

Features:

  • The axe is hand-forged and made from Swedish axe steel using traditional methods in use since 1697.
  • The steel is stuck several times, increasing its density and thereby the durability of the axe.
  • The Axe has a clear tempered zone within which the axe can be sharpened whilst not detracting from the strength of the edge.
  • The shaft is made from hickory and treated with linseed oil.

This is the smallest hatchet Hults Bruks makes so its a little limited in what you can do with it, but its impeccably made and what it can do, it does well. Its extremely portable and came with a factory edge thats probably sharper than most non-custom knives.

In a nutshell this tool is PERFECT!

I am no expert on hatchets, and was impressed by the large variety OGK offers. I wanted a quality small hatchet irrespective of cost. I quickly narrowed my choices to two Swedish makes--Gransfors-Bruk and Hults-Bruk. They seemed similarly excellent, so, how to decide? I scrutinized the reviews searching for a deal-making (or deal-breaking) word or two, which I was lucky to eventually find in a long, detailed, and highly complimentary review of the Gransfors-Bruk. I learned that Gransfors tempers their steel to a greater hardness, which allows for a sharper, albeit more brittle edge. I can live with a brittle edge on a kitchen knife, but not on a striking tool, so I went with the Hulks-Bruck.

Upon first glance, when lifting the box lid, I felt a smile cross my face. Holding the tool in hand, feeling its heft, the handle is comfort, the tools balance, elicited a pleasing YES! Removing the attractive and functional leather sheath displayed the tool in all its beauty. Its perfection encompasses the visual, the tactile, and the functional. The handles shape allows for exquisite control without requiring a tight grip. In fact, I can swing this hatchet holding it with the most relaxed grip without fear of it slipping out of my hand. Also, holding it close to the head offers precise control even with a loose grip. Workmanship is impeccable, as one would expect after 300 years of experience. Although sharp, it may not be sharp enough to shave with, but then again, I don not shave with a hatchet (nor chop wood with my razor). On the other hand, using this hatchet for its intended purpose is a real joy.

This is a great hatchet, but I don't think the edge is as tough as those done by Gransfors. After cutting down a maple sapling to make a walking stick I noticed some minor edge damage. I know I didn't hit any rocks as I cut the sapling about 4 or 6 inches from the ground. It was no big deal as 10 seconds on each side of my puck fixed it. It's just that on my gransfors SFA, I have bucked sycamore and split green live oaklots of green live oak(what a great workout!) and I have yet to even touch up the blade in just over a year of moderate , but hard use. The Jonnaker is is freaking AWESOME. I would reccomend it to anyone

This is an amazing axe. The head is every bit as good as any Gransfors or Wetterlings that I have used and is better balanced with the handle. The axe is very ergonomic, meaning that it does very well for roughing out carving pieces, while not causing fatigue. I used this axe to rough out several spoons over the course of an hour or two without fatigue. The handle selection was right on and everything about this axe says that it is a workhorse and not something you buy for the name. The sheath is much higher quality over the competition.
